Nephrology is the branch of medicine that deals with diseases of the kidneys and kidney transplantation. The kidneys, located on either side of the abdomen, perform vital functions such as filtering waste and toxins, maintaining electrolyte and acid-base balance, regulating blood pressure, preserving bone health, and supporting haemoglobin production.

Common causes of kidney damage include diabetes, hypertension, chronic stone disease, and long-term use of certain medications, especially painkillers. Kidney disease can be life-threatening and requires advanced diagnostics, including laboratory tests, sonography, and kidney biopsy.
