The Saurashtra region, with a population of over 10 million, has long faced a high incidence of kidney-related health issues. Over 50% of patients visiting established kidney hospitals in Ahmedabad and Nadiad were from Saurashtra, highlighting the urgent need for a specialized kidney care facility within the region.
Recognizing this, Dr. Pradip Kansagra, a practicing urologist at the time, conceived the idea of a tertiary-care kidney hospital in Rajkot. He was soon joined by a group of philanthropic individuals—Late Shree Devjibhai Patel, Shree Rameshbhai Patel, Shree Jayantibhai Faldu, and Dr. Vivek Joshi—who came together to form the Saurashtra Kidney Research Institute, a registered charitable trust. Late Shree Devjibhai Patel was unanimously elected as the founding chairman.
The mission was clear: to build a state-of-the-art kidney hospital offering “Quality Care at an Affordable Price.” A generous donation of ₹1 crore by Late Shree Bhagwanjibhai T. Savani from Kenya gave the project a strong start. With overwhelming community support and tireless fundraising by Dr. Kansagra—and with help from Shree Keshubhai Patel and Shree Vajubhai Vala—the Government of Gujarat allotted 3 acres of land for the hospital.
Other respected community contributors, including Late Shree Harsukhbhai Kamdar, Late Shree Lakhabhai Kadwani, and Shree Chandrakantbhai Patel, soon joined the cause. Construction began in late 1998 with the Bhoomi Poojan performed by then-Chief Minister Shree Keshubhai Patel, and the hospital was completed by December 2002. It was officially inaugurated on 2nd February 2003.
Though Dr. Pradip Kansagra had to relocate to the USA around the time of the hospital’s inauguration due to some unavoidable situation, the momentum was sustained by Shree Rameshbhai Patel, Shree Jayantibhai Faldu, and Dr. Vivek Joshi, whose continued hard work brought the hospital to the forefront of kidney care.
Thanks to the dedication of trustees, consultant doctors, and the committed medical and paramedical team, the hospital quickly earned a stellar reputation across Gujarat and India. As time passed, the original trustees who passed away—Shree Devjibhai Patel, Shree Harsukhbhai Kamdar, and Shree Lakhabhai Kadwani—were succeeded by Shree Prahladbhai Patel, Shree Nitinbhai Kamdar, Shree Suryakantbhai Patel, Shree Arunbhai Patel, and Shree Mauleshbhai Ukani.
Over time, B.T. Savani Kidney Hospital expanded into a full-fledged academic institute offering DNB (Urology), DNB (Nephrology), GNM Nursing School, DMLT, OT Techniques and CCDT like courses, along with a successful Kidney Transplantation Program. Today, it is recognized as one of the premier kidney care institutions in India.
